Man dies in early morning road death

In the aftermath of the year’s second road death, friends and family gathered in mourning and remembrance yesterday at the Alexandra Road, Devonshire home of Haile Matthews.Known also as Marcus, the 31-year-old father of two died shortly after his motorcycle collided with a car on Montpelier Road, Devonshire, near the junction with Happy Valley Road, at 12.45am.He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards at King Edward VII Memorial.“He was a great father to two girls and a great man, a humble man and a family man,” said a female relative, recalling Mr Matthews’ joy at the birth of his daughter Haileé, 12, and Telé, seven. “It’s a tragedy.”Tributes were chalked on the pavement before the family home, which lies a short distance from the scene of the accident.Fragments of debris from the crash remained at the roadside between Hesitation Lane and Happy Valley Road.Mr Matthews was a sales clerk at the Klimaxx Boutique, a clothes store on Reid Street in Hamilton which yesterday was closed until further notice.Stunned relatives last night requested to be left in privacy.The crash is under investigation, and police have requested witnesses or anyone with information to contact Pc Shantia Furbert at 295-0011.
