Food production plant planned for Southampton site

A proposal for a “food production plant” to grow and package produce in Southampton has been approved by the Development Applications Board.

The application by E&L Industries states the project consists of a facility on Industrial Park Road and a 2,238ft solar panel array, which will provide energy for it.

The plant itself will consist of four refitted shipping containers with a greenhouse on top.

It was described by the applicant as being “state of the art”.

Seedlings, primarily strawberries and lettuce, will be planted in the lower level and later transferred to the upper floor greenhouse to grow to maturity. The plants at the site will be grown hydroponically, with the produce packaged in the lower level of the facility

The application stated: “Our mission is to produce 100 percent natural organic food for Bermuda and its families. In doing this it will allow individuals access to fresh and affordable produce.”

The technical officer recommended the Development Applications Board approve the application, saying two other hydroponic plants existed on the Island, one being more than 20 years old. No issues have arisen from those other existing plants, the officer stated.

The technical officer said a condition could be added requiring engineer reports to be submitted with the building permit application to ensure the structure is stable and able to withstand hurricane conditions.

The board approved the application subject to conditions being added.

They also stated the need for engineer reports associated with the use of containers for permanent construction, and installation of solar panels.
