Community and Culture Minister donates to new social workers’ fund

Acting Minister of Community and Culture Leah Scott recently marked Social Work Month with a donation to the newly launched Ida James Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Ms Scott read a proclamation officially declaring March Social Work Month 2013, and made what was described as a “generous” donation to the fund.

The fund was launched on March 1 by the Bermuda National Association of Social Workers to help support the advancement of social worker education. It was named after Ms James.

The late social worker was the first to be qualified in that role. She was murdered in her own home on September 2, 2011.

Said BNASW president Judith Brookes: “It has been a fulfilling and rewarding Social Work Month and we are honoured to accept this donation from Minister Scott as a reflection of the valued role our members play in building this community.”
