Bahamian historian Keith Tinker said the invite given in “the spirit of cultural exchange”, would see Dr Harris advising on the administration, preservation and conservation of forts.

The islands, particularly New Providence Island, are home to a number of limestone fortifications.

Dr Tinker said there was also a history of connections with Bermuda.

Dr Harris said he looked forward to talks with the National Museum of the Bahamas, and welcomed the opportunity to build relationships with similar sister institutions in the Caribbean.

Fort Charlotte guards the entrance to the harbour at Nassau on New Providence Island in The Bahamas.
