Island remembers victims of 9/11 attacks

Saltus Grammar School has remembered two former students who died during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centre in New York.A wreath was placed at the foot of a commemorative palm tree outside the secondary department library yesterday in memory of Boyd Gatton and Robert Higley.The pair died 12 years ago when two aircraft crashed into the Twin Towers, killing almost 3,000 people.Mr Gatton was in the class of 1978/79 while Mr Higley, an American, spent three years in the school’s Upper Primary Department.Mr Gatton, 38, was employed by Fiduciary Trust International, and Mr Higley, 29, was working for Aon Risk Management Services when the towers were hit by two passenger planes on the morning of September 11, 2001.Bermudian Rhondelle Cherie Tankard, 31, also died in the attacks. She was also an employee with Aon, and started work at the World Trade Center just two days before the terrorist strike.Yesterday Acting Premier Michael Dunkley said the date will forever be etched in our minds as a day of extreme terrorism”.“We can probably all recall what we were doing when we heard the awful news,” Mr Dunkley said.“As the world commemorates the twelfth anniversary, let us remember those whose who lost their lives and continue to offer our support and prayers to the family and friends of those from Bermuda whose lives were taken on that very tragic day — Ms Rhondelle Tankard, Mr Boyd Gatton, and Mr Robert Higley.”
