Dr Saul’s stamp sale raises $1.2 million

Former Premier David Saul

Former Premier David Saul’s collection of Bermuda stamps has raised £750,000 ($1.2 million) at auction in London. The sale took place this morning at Spink auction house, with one “exceptionally rare” first-issue Perot stamp going for £120,000 ($194,000).Another first-issue Perot stamp went for £85,000 ($138,000), while a second-issue Perot went for £58,000 ($94,000).Spink associate director David Parsons said the sale had been estimated to raise between £680,0000 to £851,000.He said it was a “very good” auction, adding: “I’m sure Dr Saul will be very pleased. There was a lot of competition on many, many of the lots. Not every lot sold but a very large percentage found new homes, in particular the early Perot stamps.“There were a lot of bids: some bid on line, some by phone and we had commission bids on the book. I think the result reflects the continuing interest in the stamps of Bermuda. It’s always been a very popular collecting field.”Earlier this month, Dr Saul’s collection of Bermuda banknotes raised around £300,000 ($481,000) for charity at a Spink auction.Useful website: www.spink.com.
