Recent attacks on bus operators have sparked concern from the Bermuda Industrial Union, which issued a statement today saying “very little progress” had been made on the issue.

The union is due to meet with Ministry of Transport bosses and Department of Public Transportion managers tomorrow, after a meeting scheduled for today was postponed.

The BIU statement from president Chris Furbert said: “For the past two years we have been meeting with the management of the Department of Public Transportation and the Ministry of Transport concerning the safety of the operators but very little progress has been made.”

He added: “The general public should also be very concerned about these recent attacks, because they have to travel on the buses.”

Mr Furbert said there was likely to be representation from the Bermuda Public Services Union and the Bermuda Police Service at the meeting.

A driver was allegedly assaulted by a female passenger on Monday, while bus operator Edwin Phillips was the victim of an unprovoked assault last month.
