Raleigh Bermuda yesterday remembered a fallen friend, unveiling a mural at Paget Primary School in honour of Malcolm Outerbridge.

Malcolm, who was murdered in October 2011 at the age of 18, had been heavily involved in the group and had recently taken part in what was described as a “life changing” expedition to Borneo.

Kristin White, Raleigh’s then-executive director said: “It was such a difficult time. Malcolm had been a vocal and vibrant member of his group, and his family, especially his mom, had been an active volunteer and supporter. We were all so devastated. And actually, we still are.”

Late last year, the group met and decided to paint a mural at his former primary school, noting that Malcolm himself had suggested painting a mural as part of a local community volunteering project the day before he was killed.

The mural was painted with the approval of the school outside the library that was itself recently renamed in his honour.

Ms White said: “We chose to do an undersea scene, because as part of Malcolm’s Malaysia expedition he spent some time scuba diving and in a letter home to his parents he talked about that experience and said, ‘I became a master diver in the depths of Borneo.’

“He was so proud of himself for getting his PADI certification. So the mural includes a scuba diver wearing a ‘Raleigh’ wetsuit to represent Malcolm.”
