Soca star to headline Cup Match Summer Splash concert

Soca star Machel Montano is to headline the Cup Match Summer Splash concert in Hamilton.

The second annual Cup Match Summer Splash just got better with the announcement that Soca King Machel Montano will be among the main attractions at this year’s event.

Organisers 441 Productions and Veterans in Action, who are again being partnered by the City of Hamilton, have confirmed that the star soca singer, record producer and songwriter will headline a concert to be held in Hamilton on July 30 that will culminate Cup Match Summer Splash.

Mr Montano will be backed by his band HD Family, and will perform with special guest Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and host DJ Chow of Hot 97 NYC.

The Trinidadian, who first shot to fame as a nine-year-old boy with the song Too Young To Soca while he was still in primary school, is renowned the world over for his high energy and often unpredictable onstage performances.

Throughout a career spanning more than three decades, Mr Montano has recorded several solo albums and songs alongside many of Caribbean music’s most popular acts, including the likes of Alison Hinds, Beenie Man, Shaggy, Wyclef Jean, Pitbull and Busta Rhymes to name a few.

Earlier this year The Royal Gazette revealed that star reggae singer Tarrus Riley will headline the One Love One Life concert — to be held on July 26 in Hamilton — that also forms part of the Cup Match Summer Splash extravaganza.

Also performing at the One Love One Life concert is reggae legend Luciano who is excited to be returning to these shores.

“It is a blessing to return,” he told The Royal Gazette. “I am always excited to return to my second home, Bermuda.

“The people of Bermuda are so warm and friendly and have a true appreciation for my works. It is a wonderful place to perform and I have made so many special friends there over the years.”

He added: “I come to share life experiences through my music. I will bring my normal energy that my fans have come to expect. From Liberia to Brazil, people appreciate my message.”

Star saxophonist Dean Fraser and another artist yet to be announced will also showcase their talents at the One Life One Love concert.

Cup Match Summer Splash 2014 commences on Friday, July 25 with the City Music Festival in Hamilton. The family-oriented concert is free and will feature local talent and headliner, Who’s Bad, the ultimate Michael Jackson tribute.

Last year saw reggae great Beres Hammond headline the Cup Match Summer Splash.

“Beres Hammond is a tough act to follow,” read a press release on behalf of event organisers. “However, Cup Match Summer Splash 2014 has something for everyone.

“We are particularly excited about the Friday night, a family friendly event where everyone is encouraged to come out and enjoy a tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The venue will feature all kinds of activities for kids, vendors and a variety of food.”

While Friday night’s admission is free, organisers are offering package tickets for the One Love One Life concert and Machel Montano.

The first wave of tickets will be released tomorrow and will be available online at www.bdatix.bm as well as bdatix outlets — located at Fabulous Fashions in the Heron Bay Plaza — and Pulp and Circumstance in the Washington Lane.

One thousand general admission and 100 VIPs tickets will be available at a considerable saving.

The 1,000 tickets are $100 and include admission to both Saturday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 30 events.

VIP tickets are $300 with admission to both concerts featuring headliners Tarrus Riley and Machel Montano. VIP tickets will include access to the front of stage with private bar, bathrooms, a welcome cocktail, food and water.
