New US district judge has Bermuda roots

A newly appointed US district judge brings a Bermudian lineage with him.

George Jarrod Hazel, the grandson of a local couple, has taken the job for Greenbelt, Maryland.

Mr Hazel is the grandson of the late George and Myrtle Hazel, of North Shore in Devonshire.

He was nominated for the position in September of last year by President Barack Obama. The US Senate unanimously confirmed the appointment on May 1.

Born in 1975, Mr Hazel is currently the youngest judge on the Federal bench. He served since 2011 as the chief deputy to the Baltimore City State’s Attorney Gregg Bernstein, who lauded him as a “talented, knowledgeable and dedicated lawyer”.
