Unscheduled stop: A file photo of the Oasis of the Seas cruise ship, the second largest in the world. The ship has diverted to Bermuda this evening because of a medical emergency involving a passenger

The world’s second largest cruise ship is making an emergency stop in Bermuda so a sick passenger can be rushed to hospital.

The Oasis of the Seas is due to arrive at the East End of the Island at about 8.45pm, with the patient — an 80-year-old man — to be picked up by the pilot boat St David.

“The passenger is critically ill and is being transferred to the hospital for treatment,” said the duty officer for Bermuda Maritime Operations.

He did not reveal exactly what was wrong with the ill gentleman.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas is more than 360 metres long, weighs more than 220,000 tonnes and can accommodate more than 6,000 guests. She was on her way from Port Everglades, Florida, to Malaga in Spain.
