Regiment on recruitment drive

The Bermuda Regiment has taken to the road to attract new volunteers to the colours.

The first of a series of roadshows aimed providing information to potential recruits about the Regiment was held yesterday.

The recruitment drive will be backed up by a special open day at Warwick Camp on September 20, when potential recruits and their families will be able to meet serving soldiers and find out more about the Regiment.

“The roadshows will be very informal, but informative — we want to reach out more to the public we serve and engage with them,” Regiment Adjutant Major Benjamin Beasley said.

“We will be there to provide members of the community information about service in the Regiment and dispel — if needed — some of the myths surrounding it.”

Each of the events will highlight aspects of Regiment life and people will be able to find out more about the commitment required, pay and terms of service.

New volunteers are being offered a $500 signing on bonus and there is an interest card scheme, where serving soldiers can gain a $50 bonus if someone they give a card to later joins up.

The Warwick Camp open day, which will be attended by the Regiment’s Commander-in-Chief, Governor George Fergusson, will feature soldiers from a variety of Regiment units, including medics, signallers and infantry.

“We have nothing to hide in the Regiment and we welcome potential soldiers and their families,” Maj Beasley said.

“It’s a chance for people to come in, with no commitment, and see some displays, find out about recruit training and talk to our soldiers.

“The Regiment is a lot of fun, as well as a rewarding way to serve our community, and people are welcome to give our redesigned obstacle course a try.

“We particularly welcome families, because they must support those who choose to serve, so it’s good to see them come along as well.”

The second roadshow will be held at the Barnes Corner area in Southampton today from 4pm to 7pm.

On Wednesday, September 10, Sgt Major Lambert will be in the Warwick Post Office area between 4-7pm and in Hamilton on Thursday and Friday.

And he will be at Kindley Field Road in St George’s on Monday, September 15 between 10am and noon and 4pm and 7pm.

Further roadshows will take place at Palmetto Road at the junction with Orange Valley in Devonshire between 7am and 10am on Tuesday, September 16 and at the car park area at Trimingham roundabout, at the start of Harbour Road, Paget on Wednesday, September 17 between 11am and 2pm and 4pm and 7pm.
