Regulatory Authority praises telecoms firms’ storm efforts

Telecoms carriers have made “great progress” in restoring service after Hurricane Gonzalo, according to the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda.

Carriers are required by law to keep the Authority informed about network outages after storms and efforts to repair any problems.

“We are happy to report that they are doing that,” said Kyle Masters, the Authority’s acting chief executive. “Overall, carriers have made great progress in getting us back to normal, although some pockets of damage remain at this date.

“The Authority would like to applaud those involved on their efforts during the restoration — we know that they have had to work very hard indeed to deal with problems which must have seemed particularly daunting at the beginning.”

Mr Masters said customers with complaints about the restoration of service could contact them, although they cannot help if the fault is because of a lack of power or the failure of the consumer’s own equipment.

He also said the storm had highlighted “weakness” in the Authority’s reporting procedures and that “there has been little consistency in the way each carrier has reported its progress”.

This has made it difficult for consumers, especially, to follow what has been going on,” he added. “With that understanding, the Regulatory Authority will review its reporting procedures so that future information is clear, concise and consistent across all carriers.

“We will continue to report on the progress we make to the public.

The RA would like to express its sympathy to the public and thank them for their patience and understanding as we battle back to normal.”
