Hospitality scheme for students

Malika Musson, executive director of the Bermuda Hospitality Institute

High school students considering a career in hospitality are encouraged to apply for a scheme that can help to open doors in the industry.

Twelve spots are available on the free START scheme, an internationally recognised certification programme for pupils between the ages of 16 and 18 run by the Bermuda Hospitality Institute (BHI).

“Fifty-three students have successfully completed the START programme over the past four years”, said BHI executive director Malika Musson. “Each summer these students are employed in all sectors of the hospitality industry, from the hotels and restaurants, to tour companies and more.”

The programme, which runs from December 2 until April 25, provides a career-based educational experience that informs teenagers about, and prepares them for, the opportunties in the industry.

After completion, the students are guaranteed full-time summer employment within the sector for as long as they are in high school or college.

“We look for students who have a great attitude, like working with others and have a genuine interest in the hospitality industry,” Ms Musson said. “Whether they ultimately choose a career in the field, or continue part-time employment opportunities to supplement their income while furthering their education, this certification boosts their employability.”

Students will have to take part in the programme on evenings and weekends.

The deadline for applications is next Friday, November 14.
