Premier ‘shocked’ by day of gun violence

Michael Dunkley

Michael Dunkley has expressed his “shock and concern” in the wake of yesterday’s shootings outside Somerset Cricket Club.

Four men sustained gunshot wounds after a lone man opened fire at a group of men outside the club at about 6.55pm.

The victims were all taken to hospital, although their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

“While most Bermudians were observing this Remembrance Day, the holiday was denigrated by the reckless and callous actions of a few,” Mr Dunkley, the Premier and Minister for National Security, said.

“These latest shootings remind us that this issue of gang violence continues to demand our undivided attention as leaders, citizens and as a community who want the best for our young people.

“As the police devote all necessary resources to the investigation of these crimes, I renew the call for anyone with information to make contact with the Police directly or via the anonymous CrimeStoppers hotline. If you know something, say something.”

Police are investigating a possible link between the shooting outside Somerset CC and an earlier incident outside the National Sports Centre where a firearm was discharged. No one was injured in the earlier incident.

Witnesses or anyone with any information should contact the main Police number at 295-0011, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
