Motorcyclist fined after crash

A woman injured in a collision has been accused of driving carelessly, and fined $800 in Magistrates’ Court.

Caroline Eaton, 34, of Southampton, told the court that there had been extenuating circumstances in the September 29, 2014 collision on South Road in Southampton.

According to Crown counsel Larissa Burgess, Eaton was driving an auxiliary cycle at about 9.30pm behind a westbound car when the vehicle in front of her indicated left and turned.

She subsequently collided with the front passenger door.

Eaton told the court she did not recall seeing the vehicle ahead of her using its indicator, adding that the car had made “a very wide turn” toward a driveway that was not clearly marked.

“I went headlong into the passenger side — it was directly across the middle of the road, and the road was wet,” she said. “I didn’t stand a chance of braking. I came off my bike, wounded my leg and broke my collarbone.”

Along with the fine, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo imposed ten demerit points.
