Sex-assault accused held in custody

Magistrates Court

A Sandys man accused of sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint has been remanded into custody.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, the 50-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, applied to amend his bail conditions. At a previous court appearance on November 19, the accused was released on $20,000 bail with two like sureties, ordered to report to the Police three times a week, and was fitted with an electronic monitoring device.

But he was unable to raise the bail and has been in custody since then.

He is charged with sexually assaulting the woman as well as using a utility knife during the attack.

He is also accused of unlawfully confining the woman against her will during the attack, which is said to have occurred on November 16.

Magistrate Archibald Warner refused the application to change the bail conditions and remanded the man into custody.

He will next appear in court during the Supreme Court’s February arraignments session.
