Drugs suspect swam to safety, court told

A man suspected of carrying drugs dashed out of the airport, dived into Castle Harbour and make good his escape by swimming to the Grotto Bay Beach Resort.

But two days later 21-year-old Luke Lindo turned himself in to Police.

And in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Lindo, from Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty to obstructing a customs officer.

He also admitted climbing between a partition and a wall at the airport and leaving the airport without the authority to do so.

The court heard that Lindo and his family arrived in Bermuda on board an American Airlines flight on December 28.

Prosecutor Karen King said that customs officials suspected Lindo was carrying drugs and asked him to consent to a search and an x-ray.

She added that even though Lindo initially agreed, he escaped customs officials, sprinted out of the building, jumped into the water and eluded police officers.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo set bail at $3,000 with a like surety, ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned the matter for sentencing until March 11.

• Also in Magistrates’ Court this morning, several cases had to be adjourned because Ms King was the only prosecutor present.

“This is all rather short notice, your Worship. Unfortunately due to the industrial action, the prosecutors aren’t here,” Director of Public Prosecutions Rory Field said to Mr Tokunbo.
