Bermuda-bound vessel: Anthem of the Seas will be the fourth biggest cruise ship in the world

A mammoth ocean liner that will begin calling on Bermuda in 2016 will be christened today.

The Anthem of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean, arrived in Southampton, England, last Wednesday for the special ceremony.

The cruise ship, set to be the fourth biggest in the world, spans 16 guest decks, encompasses 167,800 gross registered tonnes, carries 4,180 guests at double occupancy and features 2,090 staterooms.

Based out of Southampton through to October, she will sail to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands until New York Harbour becomes her permanent home in November.

From there, Anthem of the Seas will “sail regularly from Cape Liberty Cruise Port on adventures to Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada and New England”, a Royal Caribbean statement said.

“It’s wonderful to welcome Anthem of the Seas to the Royal Caribbean family of ships,” Michael Bayley, the Royal Caribbean president and CEO, said when the company took delivery of its 23rd ship on April 10.

“Just like every Royal Caribbean ship, Anthem of the Seas will deliver to guests its own distinctive set of amazing adventures, whether sailing in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean.”

Among the amenities on offer, Anthem of the Seas boasts an aerial observatory — a glass capsule that takes guests more than 300 feet above the ocean — as well as skydiving and surfing simulators, and the largest indoor active space at sea, featuring a circus school, basketball court, roller rink and bumper cars.

Royal Caribbean’s website is now advertising three cruises to Bermuda, which will be sailing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, in April, May and September of 2016.

Anthem of the Seas will be one of the largest cruise ships ever to call on Bermuda, accommodating 211 more passengers than the Norwegian Breakaway at double occupancy and exceeding her length by 78 feet.
