Artists to share their techniques

Long-time collaborators: Sharon Wilson (left) and Monica Jones

Artists Sharon Wilson and Monica Jones want to share the techniques and philosophy behind the making of their pictures in an open house to be held at the Sharon Wilson Gallery on Saturday.

Collectors, the curious and other visitors are invited to get their questions answered — “any and all questions”, insist the pair, who said they are “not your ordinary art makers”.

The gallery is at 2 Turtle Place in Southampton.

Longstanding collaborators over more than four years, the two aim to foster “a deeper appreciation for the role our paintings play in enriching lives”.

Ms Wilson said: “As professional women in our former lives — Monica as a lawyer and me as an art teacher in public school — we bring to the art world a desire to strengthen family and to realise the potential we each have to live more fully.”

The open house will run from 10.30am to 6.30pm, with demonstrations throughout the day of encaustic painting, in which beeswax is used.

“If you are interested in understanding the social underpinnings of what we are attempting to do through our art, we believe you will find Saturday a stimulating and refreshing way to spend an hour or two here at the studio,” Ms Wilson said.
