Weeks hails Bermuda’s athletes

Shadow Minister of Sports Michael Weeks has praised Bermuda’s athletes for their efforts over the last weekend.

Triathlete Flora Duffy won the first Pan Am Games medal for Bermuda since 2003 when she claimed bronze on Saturday.

Samir Furqan, Sentwali Woolridge and Reyel Bowen all won their divisions at the International Chinese Martial Arts Championships

Mr Weeks said in a statement: “Congratulations are also due to boxer Nikki Bascome, who scored a knockout victory at the Extreme Entertainment Knock Out Night at Bermuda College on Saturday Night.

“We would also like to congratulate all those medal winners from the Island Games held in Jersey recently: Chris Estwanik with two golds and one silver medal, Taahira Butterfield with two gold medals, Dominique Mayo with one gold, Natasha Trott with two silver medals, David Kendell with one silver, Adrienne Smatt with one silver, Kalin Hillier with one bronze, Gabriella Arnold with one bronze, the Bermuda women’s cycling team with one silver and one bronze, the Bermuda men’s basketball team with one silver, and the Bermuda men’s golf team with a bronze.

“We are proud of all Bermuda’s winners and participants and look forward to great things from all athletes in the future. With dedication, support and effort, we are sure they can all succeed on the international stage.”
