The You Go Girl relay race has raised $13,000 for the Women’s Resource Centre this year — and more women will be encouraged to join the fun next year.

The event has been held annually for the past five years in aid of the charity which helps women with issues ranging from domestic abuse and sexual violence to housing, employment, gender equality and financial needs. This year, the race took place in June on Front Street, as opposed to the previous venue of Dockyard, with many runners in fancy dress.

Race director Christine DeSilva said: “We have seen some incredible costumes.

“There is no requirement to wear a costume but it has become so successful, we now have prizes for the most creative ones.

“We do this for fun. We encourage everybody to sign up because it promotes a healthy lifestyle and it’s for a good cause.”

Fund development and programme assistant Denaé Burchall said: “The fundraiser helps sustain our workshops and programmes, such as going to middle schools and teaching them life and communication skills.

“The relay has grown vastly in popularity over the years, becoming one of the most highly anticipated fundraising events annually. We encourage girls and women to join the You Go Girl relay to get active, win great prizes and have fun, while simultaneously assisting WRC in fulfilling our mission of enhancing the lives of women in Bermuda.”

Next year’s relay race is on June 4. To sign up, visit racedayworld.com.
