The Bermuda chapter of Altrusa today gifted the Adult Education School with a selection of books.

Jennifer Gibson, president of the Altrusa International Club of Bermuda made the presentation on behalf of the charity to Donna Daniels, executive director of the Adult Education School.

Altrusa is an association of professionals who volunteer their services to better the community. As a community service organisation, Altrusa espouses volunteerism and service. Literacy is a particular focus for Altrusa globally.

The Bermuda club plans to donate 100 books over the course of a year, to mark the international group’s centennial.

Ms Gibson said in a statement: “Adult education is integral to the success of the country. Our members wanted to do something to help ensure that everyone who needs it is supported in their education.

“We hope these books will go some way in helping adult learners achieve their goals.”

Ms Daniels said: “I am delighted that Altrusa has chosen to support the Adult Education School during literacy month.

“Research has shown a direct relationship between literacy levels across the adult population and the varying social and economic conditions that shape individuals. We will ensure the books are put to good use by those who really need them.”
