A Somerset student has earned a $30,000 scholarship to help cover the cost of university tuition fees.

Marcus Henschke was announced as the recipient of the Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers annual scholarship earlier today.

The scholarship, now in its second year, is distributed over two years. It is available to students studying insurance-related subjects, who possess both academic ability and financial need. Successful completion of an application is also a prerequisite.

In addition to the money, the scholarship also provides Mr Henschke with a mentor offering guidance over the scholarship period.

Mr Henschke attended Somerset Primary School and Sandys Secondary School. Later, he attended the Berkeley Institute, where he was head prefect, and Bermuda College.

He has completed his second year of a Bachelor of Science, Risk Management and Insurance degree at St John’s University in New York.

In his spare time he plays football and baseball and helps with various community organisations.

Sylvia Oliveira, director at Biltir, described Mr Henschke as an excellent student, who had worked had to into St. John’s University.

“We hope that this scholarship will enable him to concentrate on his studies as he completes his degree, and we wish him greater success with his very promising future,” she said.
