Sloop gets $10,000 from BISL
The Bermuda Sloop Foundation has been the recipient of a $10,000 donation.
The presentation was made by Bermuda International Shipping Limited on board the Spirit of Bermuda following the boat’s five-day circumnavigation of the island.
BISL chairman Steven Petty said that the organisation recognised and appreciated the “great value and importance” the foundation had for Bermuda’s youth through its school voyages.
“We have direct knowledge of youth who have participated in these school voyages and progressed onto further training and eventually Maritime Academy, becoming mariners or employed in other related trades,” Mr Petty said.
“We applaud this fine organisation and hope our support, and that of others, enables the continuation of these programmes for Bermuda’s young people for many years to come.”
The Spirit of Bermuda navigated 15-year-old students around the island to test their navigational skills while at the same time learning about the island’s history and marine ecosystem.
The voyage was specific to Duke of Edinburgh participants to facilitate their silver medal qualification.
