Barbara Cooper, known as “Tuppy”, has died at the age of 84.

Ms Cooper, a member of the Bermuda Rose Society, edited Roses in Bermuda, the authoritative guide.

She was a key figure in the design of the society’s revamped garden for rare and classic Bermuda roses at the Bermuda National Trust headquarters in Paget, which opened in 2001.

Born Barbara Hutchings, she married her late husband, Peter, in 1955 and joined one of the island’s iconic retailing families.

The Coopers ran the Hamilton department store AS Cooper and Sons, with Mr Cooper hailed as “Front Street’s last man standing” when he died in 2016.

Ms Cooper was descended from one of the island’s prominent seafaring families, her great-grandfather was master mariner Captain William Smith Hutchings.

Ms Cooper also played a role in the Tiny the Tree Frog book series by Elizabeth Mulderig. She helped edit Tiny’s adventures and also helped shepherd the diminutive cartoon character into print.

Ms Mulderig said last year: “Tuppy Cooper was the first one who taught me how to trust someone else with my work.”

Ms Cooper’s memorial service will be held today at St Paul’s Church in Paget.
