A Bermudian gospel group have made it on to the Billboard charts with a song first performed at a cancer benefit last year.

Last Call, made up of Tricray Astwood and Adrian Jones, reached number 18 on the Billboard Gospel Indicator Chart this month with Victory, a collaboration with Fred Jerkins.

Mr Astwood, 31, called the achievement the group's greatest to date.

He added: “It's just so cool that an idea that we had because we lost a friend to cancer has birthed all of this.”

Mr Astwood said that the success of the song started at a benefit concert.

The Gospel vs Cancer fundraiser was held in support of the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre at CedarBridge Academy last November.

Mr Jerkins was flown in for the event where Last Call performed Victory, which was written only weeks earlier.

Mr Astwood said Mr Jerkins expressed an interest in including the song on a project he was putting together to benefit cancer research.

He described it as an honour to be able to work with Mr Jerkins, who has written and produced superstars such as Michael Jackson and Beyoncé.

Mr Astwood said the buzz around the song had led to calls from radio stations looking to learn more.

He added: “It's just been incredible. Adrian and I are extremely excited.”

Last Call was formed in 2015 while both men were attending New Creation Worship Centre and performing as solo artists.

Mr Astwood said that a performance in which they had both been back-up singers led to a conversation about teaming up musically.

He added: “A lot of the things we wanted were very similar.”

Mr Astwood described the partnership as a great thing.

He added: “We both say we would much rather be in this duo than solo artists.”

Mr Astwood said the various musical influences incorporated into Last Call's music was reflective of Bermuda's unique blend of cultures.

He added: “We love reggae, soca, calypso and love, of course, traditional gospel-sounding jazz.”

The pair will go on tour in the United States next month. Mr Astwood said a number of dates would be part of Cancer Awareness Month events.

He described the recent attention on the group as humbling.

Mr Astwood explained: “We are from Bermuda and its always difficult for Bermudians to make it in the international music scene — and we're doing it.”

Victory hit number 18 on the Billboard Gospel Indicator Chart in the week of September 1. The top spot at the time was held by Zacardi Cortez.
