Two teenagers were arrested yesterday after an altercation with police that was recorded and spread on social media.

A police spokesman however said the video was “not a complete characterisation” of the incident of the incident, which resulted in one officer being injured.

He said that minutes after 4pm yesterday police received a report of “an altercation” involving school students.

The spokesman said: “The officers were near Victoria Park when they encountered a 16-year-old male student shouting offensive language.

“The teen was spoken to about his behaviour, but continued to use offensive language and was arrested.

“Several of his schoolmates then approached as officers attempted to secure the 16-year-old in a police vehicle.

“All officers involved tried to calm the situation, however the students began to get more boisterous and push police, with one student elbowing an officer in the eye, injuring the officer.”

The spokesman added that a 15-year-old student was arrested for attempting to intervene in the first arrest.

Both teenagers were taken to Hamilton Police Station, where they were released on police bail.

The injured officer was treated at the hospital and discharged.

The spokesman said: “A file is being prepared regarding the incident and the two students are expected to appear before juvenile court in due course.

“In the coming days the BPS will be liaising with the relevant school officials and parents/guardians of the students involved to minimise a recurrence.”
