Portuguese dinner tonight at Princess

A Portuguese dinner will be hosted tonight by the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club as part of celebrations of Portuguese culture in Bermuda.

The dinner is the first of several events to celebrate Portuguese culture throughout 2019 leading up to the public holiday on November 4 commemorating the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first immigrants from Madeira.

The event will be overseen by the hotel’s executive chef, Ricardo Cera, who is Portuguese, and sommelier, Alexandra Taflan, who will carefully pair wines with each course for the perfectly authentic experience.

Mr Cera, said: “I’m excited to be sharing some of my favourite Portuguese food with our guests: this is the food that I grew up with. This is a fantastic way for locals and visitors to celebrate Portugal’s influence in Bermuda by enjoying classic Portuguese food made with locally grown and caught ingredients.”

Mr Taflan said: “While it’s most commonly known for its fortified wine, Port, Portugal is a wonderful region for all kinds of wine. Guests will be treated to a range of delicious and drinkable wines throughout the meal before ending with the classic digestif.”

Guests will include prominent members of the Portuguese community, including Amaral Farms, whose produce will be used for the dinner.

Menu items will include Cozido a Portuguesa, which is a stew of beef short rib, pork belly, Portuguese sausage, cabbage, turnips, and carrots; and Caldeira a Fragateira, a seafood stew featuring sea bass, rock fish, monkfish, mussels, shrimps, and toasted Portuguese rolls.

For desserts, diners will enjoy classics such as Tarte de NATA, the traditional custard tart.
