Horseshoe Bay visitors saw a stunning array of krakens, hippos and mermaids at the Bermuda Sandcastle Competition at the weekend.

Hannah Emerson, the organiser of the Saturday event, said 37 teams put their skills and creativity to the test.

Team Amazon won the top prize overall with a recreation of the character Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

Monsters Inc claimed the honours in the adult/open category with their sculpture of a kraken with a cruise ship in its grasp. Team Rotary took home first prize in the teenage category for their depiction of a man and a group of mermaids.

Team Burgess Sprinkles toppled 13 other teams in the family category with a collection of sea shells, despite wind and rain destroying them on their first attempt.

The Ace Boys won the children's category with a massive hippopotamus.

Joe and Claudine Daugirdas won the Hamilton Princess-sponsored visitor competition with an octopus.
