Bermuda Red Cross steps in

The Bermuda Red Cross has already raised almost $29,000 in donations to support the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

Ann Spencer-Arscott, executive director of the charity, said: “As a community, Bermuda is always very supportive of our sister islands in the Caribbean when a disaster has occurred.

“Hurricane Dorian wrecked havoc in the Bahamas having stalled over the islands for more than 24 hours.

“So many of the communities were decimated, leaving thousands of residents without homes or possessions.”

The charity is one of several organisations that have stepped forward to help raise money in support of the Bahamas.

BE Solar pledged to donate $20 per solar panel sold in the month of September towards Hurricane Dorian relief efforts in the Bahamas.

Stuart Kriendler, managing director at the company, said: “We were inspired by the Government for encouraging Bermuda to support these vulnerable communities that have experienced catastrophes as a result of climate change.

“The advent of more extreme natural disasters should be a reminder of what the future may hold if we do not collectively address climate change. Extreme heatwaves, floods, fires and hurricanes are all becoming far too common.”

Colonial Group International said it would be working to support those affected by Hurricane Dorian through its Bahamas-based companies Atlantic Medical Insurance Limited, Security and General Insurance Company Limited, and Nassau Insurance Brokers and Agents.
