Family centre launches child safety campaign

Family Centre will today mark World Children's Day with the launch of a campaign to protect the island's most precious assets — its children.

The campaign will focus on the UN-mandated rights of a child to protection from violence and to have access to food, clothing and a safe home environment.

Martha Dismont, executive director for the charity, said: “In light of the recent concerns raised for safeguarding our children, we are compelled, as a children's advocacy organisation, to ask that these two rights of a child are upheld and mandated.

“Recent events within our community highlight the need for adults to be intentional in the care of our children, especially protecting them from violence and other forms of abuse, which is often on the rise during difficult economic periods.

“In addition, we know that families are often having to decide between buying groceries, providing clothing or paying an electricity bill.”

Ms Dismont added: “Whether it is protection from domestic violence, or ensuring safety, food or clothing, it is imperative that we seek help as necessary to preserve the healthy development of children.”

Family Centre has joined forces with One Communications and the Centre Against Abuse to launch a domestic abuse awareness campaign.

Sandy DeSilva, Family Centre's director of services, said 22 per cent of domestic abuse around the world involved children, which can affect the victims for life.

Anyone who needs family support can call Family Centre on 232-1116.

Victims of domestic abuse should contact the Centre Against Abuse 24-hour hotline on 297-8278.
