The Corporation of Hamilton has offered a school essay challenge to students, as part of its ongoing recognition of its 225th anniversary of service to the city.The essay topic for the contest is “Homelessness in the City of Hamilton: How Do We Deal with the Challenge?” The city has asked to schools for students to “contribute their thoughts and ideas and be a part of the solution”, a spokeswoman said. Dwayne Caines, the chief operating officer and city secretary, said of the contest: “The city is keenly aware of the challenges that face our homeless population and how their plight affects the fabric of our community.“We are actively working with community partners and helping organisations in an effort to curb the problem and identify sound solutions.“This contest serves to involve our students in that discovery. It serves to educate them about something they might not know even exists, to bring increased awareness to the issue and to solicit their ideas.” The two contest categories are for middle and high school students.Essays should be 300 to 500 words and highlight original ideas on how to combat the challenge of homelessness in Hamilton.Submissions can be dropped off to City Hall reception by 5pm on Friday, March 6, or submitted digitally to info@cityhall.bm.Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners.Winners will be invited to City Hall for the opportunity to read their essays to the Mayor, City Council and guests.
