A pilot programme to fast-track travellers arriving at the airport was launched yesterday by the Department of Immigration.The introduction of automated electronic clearing gates, or e-Gates, in the Immigration Arrivals Hall at LF Wade International Airport, is part of the department’s new border control system.A government spokesman said the pilot would at first be used for Bermudians, spouses of Bermudians, deemed children, permanent residents, and children in either of the categories aged 15 or more. He added that immigration staff would be available to assist passengers interested in taking part in the pilot programme. Jason Hayward, the Minister of Labour, said: “The introduction of e-Gates is part of the Department of Immigration’s new border control system which has been implemented over the past 18 months.“This new system is in alignment with the Government’s goal of investing in technology to streamline and improve the travel experience in Bermuda.“I welcome the pilot programme and I’m confident that the improved process will be enjoyed by travellers.”
