Deadline nears for Awards nominations

The deadline for nominations for this year's Sports Awards is tomorrow and the Department of Youth and Sport are still accepting choices for all categories.Alongside the main Athlete of the Year Award, which was won by Gavin Manders in the male categoryand Kiera Aitken in the female category last year, there are also several other awards including those for achievement, special achievement and special recognition. And for the first time in its 30 years, the award committee have created a new category of award for the Junior Athlete of the Year. With the likes of tennis star Tyler Smith, and Youth Olympics sailor Owen Siese, both having impressive years, there are no shortage of candidates for the inaugural awards. However, while any member of the public can nominate someone for the senior Athlete of the Year Award, only a sport's governing body can submit nominations for the junior award, and the level of interest in this has, according to the committee, ‘been disappointing'.Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Youth and Sport website, www.youthandsport.bm, or picked up at any of the major sports shops in Hamilton. Forms must be returned to the Department of Youth and Sport offices in the FB Perry Building on Church Street by no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
