Top batsmen impress in Cup trial

Clay Smith

Several batsmen chipped in with solid performances during a Cup Match trial held by St. George's at Wellington Oval on Saturday, including top bats Clay Smith and Charlie Marshall.

Smith's high score of 79 led the President's XI to a comfortable 143-run triumph over the Vice-President's. Scores: President's XI 258-8, Vice-President's XI 115.

Smith was the game's highest scorer with his fine innings which included 10 fours and two sixes before he was bowled by Herbie Bascome.

Opener Phillip Pitcher followed with 73 while Marshall was not out on 49 after hitting five fours and two sixes. Peter Philpott scored 14 and Detroy Smith 10.

Phillip Burgess was the pick of the Vice-President's bowlers with three wickets for nine runs off only three overs while Travis Smith claimed two for 59 off 10 overs and Bascome two for 71 off 13 overs.

Batting wasn't as enjoyable for the Vice-President's team as just four players reached double figures.

Lionel Cann was top bat with 44 while Herbie Bascome followed with 22, Rodney Trott 18 and Phillip Burgess 14.

Medium pacer Gregg Foggo had his best figures of the season, taking four wickets for just seven runs off six overs, three being maidens. Philpott claimed four for 26 off 9.3 overs with two maidens.
