Board give top player another squad shot

Bermuda national cricket training squad for the 1994 ICC Trophy Tournament was announced this week.

A source close to the situation confirmed that former captain Arnold Manders, veteran all-rounder Noel Gibbons, batsman Ricky Hill and all-rounder Clevie Wade were dropped by the selectors and then included when a compromise was reached. Fast bowler Terry Burgess was the other big name believed to have been in the original `cut' list but that could not be confirmed by the source.

A reduced squad of 18 was taken to the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control last week and it included several younger players as a bold attempt was made to look to the future.

But the board shot that notion down. Instead of accepting the sweeping changes, it decided to revert to a larger training squad of 30, thus delaying major decisions until February when a group of 17 to 18 will be chosen to tour the West Indies and again after the 1993 season.

The next ICC tournament will be held in February 1994 in Kenya.

BCBC president Ed Bailey played down the fact that the selectors were given a vote of no confidence. "The selectors made recommendations and I can't reveal what they are,'' he said, but added, "I don't deny that there were some strong revolutionary recommendations as far as sending a team to Kenya.

"I don't want to reveal what was discussed in the board internally. I don't want players to feel they're not wanted.'' But if the selectors had their way, gone would be Manders, Gibbons, Hill and Wade to name a few.

The youthful first-time inclusions to the squad are Bailey's Bay batsman Glenn Smith, St. David's all-rounder Lionel Cann and fast bowler Herbie Bascome and Cleveland fast bowler Diallo Sharrieff.

Reintroduced are Richard and Dexter Basden of Willow Cuts, Dale Fox of St.

David's and St. George's spinner David Adams.

Bailey said: "We just can't send a team to ICC without any experience. I feel this squad is a balanced one and we have great choices.

"We have certainly gone right across the table, with seasoned players and some in the squad for the first time. We're asking for people with commitment, with cricket only on their calendar for the next 15 months.'' Wicket-keeper Dean Minors' involvement in the BCBC's immediate plans are up in the air as he will undergo surgery for a knee injury incurred while playing college soccer in the United States.

The squad is expected to begin training next month.
