Darrell's defensive gamble
Bermuda open the second round of World Cup qualifying against El Salvador at the National Stadium on Sunday (3 p.m.).
Darrell is banking that full-backs Voorhees Astwood and captain Meshach Wade will spend a majority of their time in midfield when Bermuda is attacking.
Dandy Town's Neil Paynter will be the key man in the new defence as sweeper behind Leroy Stevens and Kentoine Jennings, who has been dropped back from his hard-man position in the midfield.
Shawn Smith, who has played sweeper in every qualifier until now, assumes Jennings' role but there is a noticeable drop in ball-winning ability.
Gone at the expense of Astwood, who sat out the Antigua match because of his religious beliefs, is former captain Albert Smith.
"I know El Salvador, Canada and Jamaica play with two men up front,'' said Darrell of his surprise move. "To combat this I hope to employ two marking centre-backs with Neil sweeping and Shawn Smith playing a defensive role in midfield.'' Darrell gives every indication that he will stick with the same formation next Sunday, but that is surely a dangerous precedent with Bermuda needing to think attack rather than defence during the home matches.
He added: "During attacks I will be looking for overlapping from Astwood and Wade, which means we will be playing with five midfielders at times.'' Golden boy Shawn Goater is expected to be given a free role in the midfield where the speedy Paul Cann is also located while up front the combination of Scarborough-bound Kyle Lightbourne and Elliott Jennings is retained.
Darrell's decision to switch to a five-man defence was somewhat helped after viewing El Salvador's 2-0 loss to Mexico recently. The puzzling thing, however, was that they were hardly on attack to put fear into a Bermuda team who have conceded only three goals in four World Cup matches.
"I saw the tape and Mexico dominated the game,'' said the coach. "But it's hard to go by the film as El Salvador defended so much. In fact, there was an indication that they were concentrating on nothing but defending and it was difficult to realise what formation they were actually using.'' Darrell will hold off on naming his substitutes until tomorrow.
