Yesterday's play at Devonshire Courts saw Davis emerge with a 3-0 victory while Bermuda's number one Denise Kyme also acquitted herself well against foreign opposition.

Kyme played evenly in spells against top seed Victoria Hoyt, who has just come from the Women's World Open in Canada, before going down 3-1.

Youngster Mel Caines fought well before losing 3-1 to third seed Bob Santry of the United States. Caines' improvement, aided by his experience gained at the Caribbean and world junior championships, was on view before a large crowd at the squash club. Another tough men's match saw Peter Santry beat Murray Brewer 3-2.

In the age group category, Robin Bawtree of the Royal Navy had an impressive start in beating both Rick Bartlett and John Jefferis without losing a set.
