Foggo brought in for injured Fox

team selected to defend the title against Flatts in tomorrow's second round game when they recalled batsman Anthony Foggo to replace injured bowler Dale Fox.

The surprise move means they are banking on the fast bowlers already in the team, headed by skipper Ken Pitcher, Herbie Bascome and Lionel Cann.

The full St. David's team is: Ken Pitcher (Capt.), Allan Richardson, Wendell Smith, Albert Steede, Dean Pitcher, Del Hollis, Herbie Bascome, James Pace, Phillip Pitcher, Lionel Cann, Anthony Foggo. Reserves: Bruce Foggo and Rudy Smith.

Unless Flatts can prove that it is an unwise ommision, the exclusion of a fast bowler for Fox seems to indicate what little concern the east enders have for the batting strength of their opponents.

A year ago Flatts managed to hold on for a uneventful draw, replying with 129-5 after St. David's had piled up an unbeatable 335-4. But the fact that Flatts came close to struggling after losing five wickets may have been enough to convince St. David's that no extra pace bowling was needed.

"The absence of Dale does leave a void in our bowling, but I think we still have an attack good enough to deal with Flatts,'' said skipper Pitcher.

"We had some discussion when we picked the team as to whether to include Anthony Foggo or Scott Minors and in the end we went with the batsman. I hope this doesn't discourage Scott in any way,'' he added.

Minors, who is in his mid 20s, still has time on his side as far as Counties Cup is concerned and Pitcher feels that Foggo's experience in the competition only makes their already formidable batting line-up even more potent. They have sound batting right down to number eight.

Foggo, who hammered 82 not out against Flatts in his last appearance against them two years ago, struck 31 against Police on Sunday and has looked impressive during training.

Foggo, who was the team's top opener and regular wicket-keeper until two years ago, moved from St. David's to join Western Stars last season. He struggled for runs with his new team for a while but was called on to represent the east enders in the Counties during the final round against Cleveland last year when he took a record six catches.

With Fox unavailable, St. David's will be looking for pace from their skipper, who will undoubtedly take the new ball, and Herbie Bascome who turned in his best effort against Bailey's Bay in the first round with five wickets for 36 runs from only 10 overs.

Fiery Lionel Cann will follow with his medium pace bowling and then skipper Pitcher will probably count on slower stuff from his most capable spinner Del Hollis, together with former skipper Allen Richardson and James Pace.

ANTHONY FOGGO -- Looking for more runs against Flatts as he rejoins champions St. David's for tomorrow's Eastern Counties Cup tie.
