Hood toast Turner's double strike

Robin Hood sent an arrow to the heart of Paget's FA Cup dreams yesterday.

And it was two-goal marksman Simon Turner who delivered the fatal strike.

With the game finely balanced at 1-1, Turner found the target again in the 58th minute with a spectacular diving header in the penalty area.

He launched himself at a well-struck cross from the right flank by the tireless Alex McLaughlin.

The ball crept past Paget's hapless 'keeper Paul Smith to whoops of joy on the Hood bench.

Turner -- whose pace was a constant menace to Paget -- had earlier found the net from about 10 yards after Smith made a complete hash of a goal kick.

The ball went straight to Turner who nervously slotted the ball home through Smith's legs in the 37th minute.

The afternoon at St. David's had threatened a different outcome for the Commercial Division team when Paget grabbed the lead.

Striker Alan Williams' 30th minute goal was a classic poacher's strike, although Hood 'keeper Graeme Pitkethly may feel he should have done somewhat better.

Paget's Damian Mendoza whipped in a curling 25-yard cross from the right, which the diving Pitkethly could only parry.

The grateful Williams managed to drill the ball over the line.

It was a goal which a high-spirited group of Hood supporters clearly felt was against the run of play.

And they had a point.

The pacy Turner repeatedly found himself in good scoring positions throughout the first 45 minutes, but failed to capitalise.

Forties 2, Wolves 1 The Forties plan was to counter Wolves' youth and speed with experience -- and it worked perfectly at White Hill Field yesterday.

The Commercial League side, who went into this cup tie as the underdogs, emerged with an upset victory over their Second Division opponents thanks to a goal after 60 minutes from striker Andy Robinson.

The hard-working Robinson sealed the win when he finished superbly after Jorg Wolf had delivered a defence-splitting pass that left Wolves in disarray.

Earlier, after 38 minutes, Barry Hughes had beautifully chipped home a shot from outside the penalty box to give Forties a surprise lead after Wolves had dominated much of the play. It was one of the few raids Forties had been able to muster.

Wolves were sharper and the better drilled team but much of their sound approach work petered out when play reached the penalty box where their forwards seemed to lack ideas.

One culprit was Anthony Thomas who often held onto the ball too long when he should have got off a shot on goal.

Shannon Berkeley should have snatched the equaliser for Wolves after 48 minutes but he put his shot wide from close range.

Substitute Dion Wainwright eventually scored from the penalty spot after 51 minutes to deservedly level the scores, the referee rewarding Wolves after centre-half Bret Michelson had committed a foul.

But the appearances off the bench by the experienced veterans Wainwright and Andy Laws didn't help Wolves much up front. As they continued to become frustrated through poor finishing Forties persevered and remained dangerous when counter attacking.

It was during one such raid that Policeman Robinson settled the issue with his decisive strike.

Both teams finished with 10 players. Wolves had Shannon Berkeley sent off for rough play after 86 minutes and Forties lost Derek Patience through injury after 75 minutes.

Valley FC 2, Exiles 3 Exiles gained passage to the next round of the FA Cup, ousting fellow Commercial Division hopefuls Valley in an entertaining five-goal affair at PHC Stadium yesterday.

A rocky start put Valley in a hole after just seven minutes. Goalkeeper Blake Lambert failed in his effort to clear an inswinging corner by Craig Tyrell, succeeding only in punching the ball against defender Andrew Fraser and watching it rebound into goal at the near post.

The early score appeared to daze the home team, but they were able to shake loose the cobwebs with Ross Smith drawing them back on even terms in the 25th minute.

It was a persevering effort by the chunky forward who saw his initial shot blocked by a defender, before planting his second chance into the low right corner, well beyond the reach of Exiles goalkeeper Lyndon Raynor.

However, celebrations were short lived as Edwin Ford restored Exiles' one goal advantage a scant three minutes later, finishing off a fine move started by right back Matthew Bezant and also involving Kent Bascome and Marvin Hassan.

The second half witnessed Exiles continuing to enjoy the lion's share of possession, while Valley tried in vain to close the gap.

Exiles' captain Shawn Simmons blew a simple chance to increase his team's lead in the 59th minute, missing a penalty.

Simmons' blessings were saved moments later as a move started by David Marchant on the left saw the ball switch sides before finally being centred by Ford for Tyrell to connect for the side's third goal.

Roger Hall added respectability to the scoreline when he notched a consolation goal just as time expired and Valley were left to look back on the early blunder which ultimately proved decisive.

IN CONTROL -- Former Bermuda national team player Derek Scott brings a halt to this raid by Wolves during yesterday's cup tie at White Hill Field. The striker turned centre half helped Forties to a 2-1 upset victory.
