Hopeful Caines heads Bermuda contingent
New York City Marathon.
Caines has spent much of the summer months preparing for this challenge to break Ray Swan's long-standing record of two hours, 26 minutes and 35 seconds for the 26.1-mile run in Boston.
Pushing Caines among the local runners will be Manuel Lopes, a veteran of marathons in the Big Apple while the only other long-distance runner of note will be Ray Ming.
There are eight first-time marathoners in Bermuda group and five women, none of whom will be challenging Debbie Butterfield's record of 2:54:18 set in the 1990 Bermuda International Marathon.
The fastest time by a Bermuda-based runner in New York was 2:25:23 by Peter Lever in 1983.
Margaret Young Lever will be using the race as a training run for Bermuda International eRace Weekend. She plans to stop at the 16-mile mark.
