Jamaica go for broke

of a draw against Bermuda on Sunday will greatly diminish their chances of advancing in the World Cup qualifying round.

While the press in San Salvador viewed their team's 1-0 loss here last Sunday against Bermuda as being a "shameful defeat'', the Jamaica press was not nearly as critical after their team failed to hold on to a 1-0 lead and allowed Canada to earn a 1-1 draw with a late goal in their opening second round qualifier, also on Sunday.

Jamaican football officials yesterday remained optimistic and Ronald McLean, secretary of the Jamaica Football Federation, revealed that they were still hopeful that the team would manage victories against both Bermuda and Canada.

"We are looking forward to what we expect to be great games ahead of us in Bermuda and then in Canada,'' said McLean from their headquarters in Kingston's National Stadium yesterday.

"We are aiming for two points against Bermuda and Canada, there is no two ways about it. If we win both games we will move at the head of the table and this is the goal of our squad. Our coaching staff remains very optimistic.'' While Jamaica would have liked to have snatched maximum points from Canada last Sunday, McLean said that they were still nevertheless pleased with the overall performance of the team.

In this first game it was felt that the team played to about 80 percent of its capabilities. McLean felt that with a slight improvement they should take maximum points from the matches that are left.

"The crowd of 22,000 that showed up at our National Stadium last Sunday were very enthusiastic, even after the game. We all would have liked to have seen a victory, but the team played well and was well received by the fans, '' he said.

"The result was no setback, we are confident that we can build on that performance. Our goal was a great one, it was something that brought the greatest roar from the fans. It was just a tremendous shot from Hector Wright,'' he added.

Wright is one of the players who coach Carl Brown will be banking on when close to the same team is expected to line up against Bermuda. "I don't anticipate any major changes at all, more than likely he will field the same team that played against Canada,'' said McLean.

One thing Jamaica were able to show during their performance against Canada was that they showed no ill effects from having five top players suspended after the JFF took disciplinary action against them.

In addition to having midfield schemer Hector Wright, the Jamaicans will be fielding three professionals, two who play in the United States and one who performs in Israel.
