In the three-day New England Optimist Championships, Alexander Kirkland led the Island's five-strong contingent with a superb 21st placing in a fleet of 167.

But the result could have been much better had Kirkland not capsized twice during the three days.

With the large fleet divided into three flights, Kirkland posted two first places and two seconds in his flight but then dropped down the standings with a 20th and a 29th after capsizing.

Meanwhile, in the same fleet Alex Lines placed 26th, A.J.Crane 30th, Giles Spurling 41st and J.P.Doughty 117th.

The youngsters are now on their way to Ottawa where they will first compete in the Ontario Championships before moving on to Kingston for the Canadian Olympic Regatta.
