New ponies take to track
at the Vesey Street Equestrian Centre the day before.
Two new ponies are making their debut in Bermuda on Sunday. Eddie The Great, who will be driven by Michael DeCosta, and Tina's Princess, driven by Anthony Rego.
Eddie The Great arrived in Bermuda a month ago after two successful seasons in the United States. He was the top two-year-old pacer in the North America and Florida circuits and as a three-year-old won almost every stakes race.
The one he did not win he came a close second to Ponder Babe, who has also been brought to Bermuda and will be on show next race day with Daniel Greenslade at the reins.
Eddie The Great timed straight into the junior free-for-all at a time of 1:14/3. He will compete against Sandacre Tashiba, Little Dinger and L&S Mowtown Scott.
Tina's Princess also competed in the two and three-year-old stakes and, although not as successful as Eddie The Great and Ponder Babe, showed great promise on the smaller quarter-mile tracks. Anthony Rego, her driver, is a comparative newcomer to racing. He started off the season driving the veteran Creed's Little Miss who has just retired from racing.
Tina's Princess timed into the 1:19 to 1:24/4 bar, but she is expected to do really well on our small, tight track and, without a doubt, will move up in the time bars.
Ed (Tom) Matthews should be out driving Catch A Fire. In this pony's debut race at the start of the current seaon, he ran five seconds out of his time bar. This means that Catch A Fire will be classified on his fastest time, which is 1:12/2, and that puts him up into the fastest time bar, the free-for-all.
Meadow Rose, the only trotter, will be out for the first time this season and will be driven by Francis DeSilva. She will race in the 1:16-1:18/4 time bar with V Six, Penny's Wildwood and Fairway Debutant.
