Police go top after nine-wicket victory
Police moved to the top of the Premier League as they took advantage of lowly Social Club with a nine wicket thrashing at St. John's field yesterday.
Not even a torrential downpour could halt the charging men in blue as they waited out the rain and then returned to humiliate the home side.
Police won the toss and sent in their opponents on a damp pitch that certainly aided the bowlers with its uneven bounce.
However, Social Club's opening batsmen showed some early resistance.
Webster Mills (18) and Gladwin Richardson (11) gave the home side a solid start, putting on 21 for the opening wicket and Dwayne Adams, at number three, then added another eight runs.
But after their dismissals the wickets tumbled at regular intervals and there was never any doubt about who would win.
Social Club were eventually bundled out for a meagre 81, with Roger Blades, Michael Jackman, Dwayne Leverock and Dennis Archer all taking two wickets.
Police were left with an hour and 20 overs to score the required runs, and they did so comfortably.
Archer scorched an unbeaten 45 with David Greenidge adding 26 and Tyrone Smith 10 not out.
Bailey's Bay 184-7 Somerset 79-3 Bailey's Bay relinquished their hold on the top spot in the Premier League when they were held to a draw by Somerset in this rain-affected match at the West End.
The visitors made a big effort to get a positive result, but luck was never on their side.
However, under gloomy skies Devrae Hollis and Cal (Patches) Dill took their turn in the spotlight.
Hollis scored a masterful 68 during his time at the crease, mixing patience and aggression. The opener crashed 10 fours as he anchored the batting on a damp and unpredictable wicket.
Meanwhile, Dill celebrated the birth of his first son with a quickfire unbeaten 55.
No Somerset bowler was spared as the powerful middle order batsman slammed four sixes and three fours before the visitors declared their innings at 5.38 p.m.
Winston Reid was the most successful Somerset bowler with three for 12, while Perry Maybury picked up two wickets and James Swan and Stephen Brown one apiece.
Somerset were never in with a chance of reaching the the total set by Bay and ambled to 79 for the loss of three wickets.
Lee Raynor Jr. notched his highest score of the season with 34 not out, while Maybury contributed 31.
