Prospect 1, BAA 2
proved sufficient to enable BAA to clinch the second promotion spot to the First Division next season.
Goals late in the game by centre-half Norman Correia and left-back Wayne DeSilva means that BAA will join champions Devonshire Cougars in the top flight for the 1994-95 season. It will be the first time in 12 years that BAA have been in the top flight.
But they had to sweat it out against a Prospect team who fought hard despite their lack of finishing strength. Prospect recently spoiled Wolves' promotion hopes with a 4-0 win and looked in the mood for another upset.
After a scoreless first half the teams battled on competitively until Correia broke the deadlock when he firmly headed home a Robert Pacheco corner after 70 minutes.
Prospect fought back bravely but blew chances with Tracy Adams and Andrew Rollins putting shots over the goal from close range.
DeSilva got the crucial second goal after 80 minutes when he put the finishing touches to a long throw from Pacheco that caught the defence in disarray.
There was with precious time left when Prospect pulled a goal back when the hard-working Anthony Mouchette netted from close range.
Prospect pinned down their opponents afterwards but there was not sufficient time for them to snatch the equaliser.
A jubilant Johnny Adams, coach of BAA, said afterwards: "We are back in the First Division because we deserve to be there after winning 11 games. We had hoped to finish this race for second today and we pulled it off.'' Dev. Cougars 2, Wolves 2 Wolves killed their own slim hopes of promotion when they blew a comfortable 2-0 lead before being held to a draw against the league champions at Devonshire Rec. field.
In the end, it did not matter as BAA got the win they needed to assure themselves of promotion.
Nathan Webb stunned Cougars when he netted after just six minutes to put early pressure on the unbeaten champions.
The score remained 1-0 at the half before Hewvonnie Brown gave Wolves a two-goal lead after 67 minutes.
However, Cougars were able to recover four minutes later with veteran Dale Russell scoring to make it 2-1.
Play remained competitive until the 80th minute when Dapo Frederick grabbed the equaliser for Cougars before Wolves could do any further damage. It was the team's 50th league goal of the season.
Paget 0, Somerset Eagles 10 Visitors Eagles exploded for eight goals in the second half to record the biggest victory in the Second Division this season yesterday as Southampton Oval.
Only Terrence Christopher's goals in the 10th and 28th minutes separated the teams at the half. And though he also missed a penalty, Christopher made amends with two more in the second half.
Also scoring were Sean Dill, Dion Minors (57th and 62nd minutes), a penalty from goalkeeper Tyrone Simons and late tallies from Sam Maybury and Eddie Callender who closed out the scoring in the 84th minute.
Both teams finished the match short after each had two players sent off for fighting in separate incidents. Steven Burrows and Everett Wellman of Eagles and Perry Saunders and Chauncey Smith of Paget were ejected.
Paget actually finished the match with eight men when Antoine Simmons asked to go off with a hamstring injury.
Port Royal 0, Ham. Parish 7 Port Royal, facing the biggest defeat in the Second Division this season, decided enough was enough at the end of the first half and refused to re-appear for the start of the second at White Hill field.
Both teams had only nine men but it was Parish who did the scoring as player/coach Johnny Nusum led the way with two goals. Lone strikes came from Franklyn Simmons, Trinn Burgess, Joe Lathan, Ashton Outerbridge and Chris Caisey.
IT'S THERE -- Wayne DeSilva celebrates the goal that put BAA into the First Division yesterday.
