Rampaging Griffin earns rematch

Amateur Golf Championships at Mid Ocean Club as defending champion Reggie Hawes again meets fellow American Lisa Griffin after each recorded contrasting victories yesterday.

As has been the case all week, Griffin soared effortlessly while Hawes was made to battle her way through yet another tough game.

Lee Ann Vogel fell victim by a six and five margin to Griffin, who continued to steamroll her way through the field after starting the week by shooting a tournament-best medal round score of 72 to claim the number two seed.

Such has been the domination of the Connecticut resident that no one has been able to push her past the 13th hole.

Meanwhile, top seed Hawes has shown the grit of a true champion, edging by Sally Newi one-up in the quarter-finals and in yesterday's semis going to the 20th hole before subduing the challenge of Bonnie Taylor.

Taylor had looked all but finished when Hawes, a two-time winner, led by four after nine holes but a spirited comeback on the back nine enabled her to tie it up at the 17th.

The pair halved the 18th and 19th but a poor tee shot into the right rough proved Taylor's ultimate undoing. She followed with shots into two bunkers and was forced to concede to Hawes who had made it on the green in regulation.

"It was a really close and tough match,'' said Hawes, enjoying the fortune that seems to run with champions. "She came back with some really solid golf on the second nine.'' Looking forward to the 36-hole final against friendly rival Griffin, Hawes said that she would have her work cut out and that Griffin was probably going to be seeking redemption from last year.

"Lisa and I have played a lot back home against each other and it's just about even between us.

"I'll have to play a steady round tomorrow and keep on top of her.'' The championship flight consolation final also takes place today featuring Shirley Wildi, a four-and-three victor over Helen Stovell, and Diana Diel, conqueror of Lyn Cook.

Also today in the first flight final, Claudette Gottsegen meets Nonie Reynders while Joyce Craig takes on Marlene Jones in the first flight consolation final.
