Simons hat-trick sends Islanders into 2nd Division
Darron (Duke) Simons sent St.David's tumbling back to the Second Division by scoring a hat-trick to lead Dandy Town to this two-goal victory at Lord's yesterday.
Relegation from the First Division is now an all East End affair with neighbours St. George's already doomed.
St. David's, though, could have survived at least for a little longer had they taken their chances, which included a penalty they failed to convert. Time and time again their opponents were let off the hook when forwards, in particular Tyrone Weeks, wasted scoring chances with the defence reeling.
As it was two of Town's goals came from the penalty spot by Simons while the third was more artistic, coming when the forward coolly slipped between goalkeeper Kuhn Evans and centre-back Jamel Warren to steer the ball home.
St.David's netted a consolation goal at the end when player-coach Andrew Bascome scored from close range.
It wasn't an attractive game by any means but the fight, determination and moments of imagination shown by St. David's in the first half gave them a slight territorial advantage during that period.
But they again learned that goals are what count, and by the interval the visitors held a comfortable 2-0 lead thanks to Simons' two penalties.
After nine minutes he put Town ahead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul, and then the second spot kick came a minute before the break when Patrick White handled, Simons this time following up his right-footed shot with a left footer that gave Evans no chance.
Inbetween St. David's enjoyed some outstanding attacking raids but most broke down through poor finishing.
One close call came after 17 minutes when Sergio Goater got around centre-back Wylie Rudo only to see goalkeeper Antoine Lightbourne masterfully tip his 18-yard shot over the top.
St. David's continued to be haunted by misses when play re-started. After 53 minutes substitute Ottis Minors squandered a penalty awarded for a foul, putting his kick wide of the post.
Town lifted their overall performance after this and were themselves unlucky when Kirk Butterfield blasted a 20-yarder against the post.
But two minutes later Simons got his hat-trick with a fine dibbling act that tore the home side apart.
Bascome put his team on the scoresheet near the end, but by then it was clear that all of the points were already in the bag.
