Steede stomps on blues as youth select triump by Patrick Bean
Bermuda Youth Select 154 Hyderabad Blues 121 Spurred by a scintillating half century from captain Albert Steede, the Bermuda Youth Select dealt another crushing blow to the visiting Hyderabad Blues at Devonshire Rec., yesterday with a 33-run triumph.
Steede, who scored 43 for Western Stars on Wednesday against the visitors, this time stroked 89 valuable runs -- more than half of the team's total -- enabling Bermuda to build a respectable total.
It was a commanding performance by the number three bat as he was able to keep the scoreboard turning over as wickets fell around him at an alarming rate.
Only opener Dwight Basden was able to provide adequate support with 29 as the middle order collapsed. Devrae Hollis (five), Devon Wade (two), Cleon Scotland (nought) and Hassan Durham (nine) all failed to apply themselves on a grassy pitch that offered assistance to the bowlers.
But this only served to further highlight the performance of Steede, who was particularly harsh on anything drifting along the off-side. He cut and drove to near perfection, dissecting the field with surgeon-like precision.
Ironically, it was this aggressiveness that ultimately proved his undoing.
After smashing left-arm spinner R.Sridhar for seven fours in the space of two overs, he was bowled by the Indian trying for yet another big hit and fell just shy of what appeared a sure century.
Sridhar wound up with figures of two-for-36 from nine overs and was aided by Rohit Mehendra, who claimed three-for-30, while team-mates Gagan Malik and D.Sridhar each had two apiece.
Bermuda struck soon after taking the field with Garry Williams producing a fiery early spell of pace bowling. Williams tore a strip through the Indian's top order, seizing three wickets in quick succession, including skipper Vikray Mansingh for a duck, as Hyderabad stumbled to 16-for-three.
The diminutive Vinay Kumar held up the locals' charge with a dogged knock of 35. He and number five bat Kiran Kumar (18) at one time threatened a revival, posting 40 runs for the fourth wicket before Kiran fell victim to a Durham away-cutter, edging the ball to Steede at first slip.
A late whirlwind 27 by Rohti created for some tension at the end as Hyderabad inched closer to the required total, however, the return of Williams and Winston Trott to the attack served to end any notion of an upset as they rolled through the tail.
Williams finished with sparkling figures of four-for-11, while Durham claimed three-for-25 and Trott two-for-12.
Hyderabad face a Bermuda President's IX tomorrow at Lord's beginning at noon.
